STERNE/SPECTRUM model grids

Introduction

Grids of model atmospheres and synthetic spectra, including the model structure, broadband flux distribution, emergent spectrum, continuum and normalized spectrum within selected wavelength intervals, computed with the LTE model atmosphere code Sterne and the formal solution code Spectrum.

Details of models in each grid are given in separate files. Abundances are given as relative abundances by number. The abundance of the dominant chemical species is nominal, being effectively (1 - Sum_i.n_i).

Grids are generated using a Condor Cluster at the Armagh Observatory. Grid Tools for submitting jobs, checking results and generating the index files attached are provided for local users.

There are currently nearly 4000 separate model atmospheres in these grids, and, including the hires spectra, over 12000 separate files. Many of these are in gzipped format. We plan to make gzipped tarballs of selected models available in due course. We also plan to enable web users to plot a given spectrum, or section thereof, online.

Convergence. Models are considered to have fully converged when all flux errors are < 0.5% and all temperature corrections are < 1K. In general, problems with flux errors > 1% or temperature corrections > 1K near the upper or lower boundaries are not considered fatal. Users should, however, be wary of models which show flux errors > 0.3% in the line forming region. This indicates an error in the temperature stratification and may lead to errors in the formal solution. A more extended discussion of convergence issues will be given elsewhere.

A comparison of part of the high-resolution spectra computed for models with Teff=35000 K and log g=5.0. The H:He ratio runs from 0:100 at the bottom to 100:0 at the top, corresponding to the grid sequence h00he100 to h100he00. See above for the corresponding metal abundances used.
