SEPTEMBER MONSOON

Armagh Observatory, 1 October 1999

Last month had the second highest rainfall since records began at the Armagh Observatory way back in 1840. The monthly total amounted to 6.26 inches, more than twice the average of 3.00 inches. Only in 1962 was the September figure higher at 6.53 inches, while the third wettest September was in 1946 at 5.70 inches.

The mean temperature for the month was also exceptional, 14.5 degrees Celsius, nearly two degrees more than the average monthly temperature, 12.7 degrees. At least the rain was warm!

Sunshine was average for the month at 106.9 hours.
