Royal Mail stamp of Armagh Observatory features on Postbox in Armagh

Armagh Observatory, 8th June 2015

A special plaque illustrating a stamp that was part of a special set of astronomical stamps issued in 1990 celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Armagh Observatory was unveiled today on a postbox in Armagh to mark the 50th anniversary of Royal Mail's Special Stamps programme.

In 1990, Royal Mail issued a set of four astronomy stamps to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Armagh Observatory and the centenary of the British Astronomical Association. Armagh's special stamp plaque was unveiled on the postbox close to the bottom of the Observatory Drive and the Royal Fusiliers Museum, Mall East, Armagh, BT61 9DL. This is one of 50 special stamp plaques that are being installed on postboxes throughout the UK.

1. A stamp celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Armagh Observatory issued in 1990, is to be unveiled at 1.30pm on Monday 8th June 2015 on the postbox close to the Observatory and the Royal Fusiliers Museum on the Mall East in Armagh as part of the Royal Mail's 50th anniversary celebrations of its Special Stamp programme;

2. Professor Mark E. Bailey and Dr Mart de Groot, Director and former Director of the Armagh Observatory, will be present to unveil the stamp plaque at a special photocall today;

3. Royal Mail is installing 50 plaques with images of some of the most popular stamps on 50 post boxes in locations across the country;

4. Each of the 50 postboxes is located in one of the UK's cities, towns or villages that has a special connection with the featured stamp;

5. A total of 2,663 Special Stamps have been issued since July 1965 and every new stamp design is approved by Her Majesty, The Queen before it is issued;

6. Royal Mail stamps have mirrored the changes in society and culture at large.
