Armagh Observatory will be hosting a special event on Sunday, 10th June, as part of the International Heliophysical Year European Observatories Open Doors Day. The event, which is free and open to all, will start at 3 pm with a guided tour of the Observatory Grounds, Astropark and Human Orrery. This will be followed at 4 pm by an illustrated talk and questions on astronomy in the Observatory library.
Armagh Observatory Hosts Open Day For International Heliophysical Year
This European initiative is part of the International Heliophysical Year 2007 - 2008 programme. About 70 scientific institutes throughout Europe will be taking part in this action, which aims to widen public understanding of astronomy and solar physics throughout Europe.

The guided tour will take you around the Armagh Observatory's 14 acres of landscaped gardens and grounds, including the Armagh Astropark, the phenology garden, historic telescope domes, the meteorological station, and its new outdoor exhibit, the Human Orrery.
This will be followed by a virtual tour of the Sun given by Dr Miruna Popescu. She will take you flying around the Sun and the Earth and show you the latest images and movies from three of the best solar space observatories.
If you want to know more about our Sun and how it influences the Earth's environment, or anything about the stars, planets and galaxies, then use this event to ask an astronomer in the question-and-answer session.
This is the second major event hosted by the Armagh Observatory under the umbrella of the DCAL's Skills and Science programme and the International Heliophysical Year collaboration. The previous one, in March this year, was designed especially for young people. It involved about 300 schoolchildren from both sides of the border. This time we would like to attract residents of Armagh and visitors to the city of all ages and backgrounds.
Access to the Observatory is from College Hill by the road leading off the northeast corner of the Mall, close to the Courthouse and opposite the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum. The event takes place on Sunday, 10th June from 3 pm to 5 pm.
