2. Huge Crowds at IAA - WWT event
The IAA observing & planetarium evening at WWT, Castle Espie, near Comber,
on Saturday night was a great success! We had by far the largest crowds ever
at such an event - probably about 200 in total - and we had a number of
successes: a really bright Iridium flare (mag - 6!) for the early birds; then an
excellent pass of the ISS, skimming over Orion's head, which we all saw, and
then some lovely views of a spectacular crescent moon, and Saturn. But we also
had showers so it was just as well that we had the amazing & indefatigable
Robert Hill with the mobile Planetarium who did 4 shows on the trot to full
houses, and our own IAA 'Ulsternaut' Derek Heatly, who did 3 presentations in a
row on his past and planned space exploits.
So in spite of the cloudy sky at times, all seemed highly satisfied with
a good evening. Well done to all concerned.
3. IFAS Turkey Eclipse Trip
I have just sent out an E/M notice to all booked on the IFAS eclipse trip
to Turkey giving details of the optional trips to local places of interest
that have been arranged. If you are going on that trip, and do NOT receive that
email, please let me know by return, as there are still some anomalies on our
emailing list.
4. IAA Meeting, 8 March
The next IAA meeting will be on Wed 8 March, 7.30 p.m., Stranmillis College,
Stranmillis Road, Belfast. This will be a double-header, featuring a
presentation on the forthcoming Total Eclipse by Yours Truly, particularly covering
the IFAS eclipse trip to Turkey; and a 'Hands-On Telescopes' session, by v
arious IAA members. This will give you a chance to see how to assemble, mount,
and use a wide variety of telescopes and mounts. Everything you were afraid to
ask, and more, in other words! Admission free, including light refreshments.
All welcome.
Clear Skies,
Terry Moseley
