Subject: MAJOR IAA LECTURE, WED 21st.
Hi all,
Just another reminder about the IAA opening lecture of the new season,
details as follows:
WORLD FAMOUS ASTRO-BIOLOGIST TO SPEAK IN BELFAST.
The IAA is delighted to announce that the world's leading expert on 'Life
From Space', will give a free public lecture in Belfast on Wednesday 21
September.
Prof Chandra Wickramasinghe, FRAS, FRSA, Professor of Applied Mathematics &
Astronomy at Cardiff University of Wales, and Director of the Cardiff Centre
for Astrobiology, will give a lecture entitled "Where are we in our search
for our Origins?"
Professor Wickramasinghe is the world's leading authority on the
controversial and exciting theory that life on Earth (and probably other planets too)
came from space, being 'seeded' from giant comets over the history of the Solar
System.
He also argues that subsequent major events, such as evolutionary jumps, and
the major 'extinctions' such as that of the dinosaurs, were also caused by
new genetic material deposited in Earth's atmosphere by close encounters with
comets.
And he presents evidence that major global pandemics such as the flu
epidemic at the end of the First World War, were also caused by 'germs' from space.
Recent evidence from the 'Deep Impact' probe which collied with a comet
supports his theory, as it revealed lots of organic material inside the comet.
It promises to be a fascinating and controversial lecture! It will be held
in Lecture Room 5, Stranmillis College, at 7.30 p.m., on Wednesday 21
September.
Admission free, including light refreshments - come early to be sure of a
seat.
And as our IAA programme card hasn't arrived yet, please pass on the info
about this lecture to anyone you know, in case they haven't got, or read, this
email.
Hope to see lots of you there,
Clear Skies,
Terry Moseley
