Subject: Lectures, Walk on # Wild Side, Amagh Planetarium

Hi all,

A final reminder about these two:
1. The next IAA lecture will be on Wed 6 October at 7.30 p.m. in Stranmillis
College, Stranmillis Road, Belfast, when John O'Neill (IAA & IAS, and Deputy
Chair of IFAS), will give a talk entitled "Great Comets of the 20th Century".
Admission is free, including light refreshments, and all are welcome.

2. There will be a special event at the Ulster Museum at 1:00-5:00 pm, Sat
9 Oct and 2:00-5:00, Sun 10 October entitled "A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE". This
will be on similar lines to the famous 'Rocky Road Show', but will cover life
sciences as well as geology/astronomy. The Irish Astronomical Association &
the Belfast Geologists' Society will be represented.

3. On Mon. Oct. 11, Guy Hurst, the Editor of "The Astronomer" Magazine, and
past President of the British Astronomical Association, will give a lecture
entitled "HUNTING FOR EXPLODING STARS". It's at 8pm in the Henry Grattan
Building, Dublin City University, and is being held in association with The British
Guy will speak about exploding stars (nova and supernova) and the UK's
search for them, which he leads. Special admission rates of 3euro/2 for any
member of any astronomy club in Ireland, plus 2 FREE tickets to every club's
committee. Just state that you are a member of whatever club, at the door.

4. GOOD NEWS! Armagh Planetarium has finally secured 2m funding for a
complete refurbishment & re-fit, including a new Digistar-3 Projector. The work is
expected to take about 15-18 months, so before too long there will be a
'brand-new' up-to-date facility there again! More details soon. Well done to Dr Tom
Mason & his staff for persevering under the present difficult circumstances,
and in securing this funding. I'm told that there's even better news to come to
coincide with the re-opening, but I'm not at liberty to say any more now!
Watch this space, as they say!

Clear Skies,

Terry Moseley
