Rules and Information

  1. The Library is a reference library and should be used as such; borrowing of books and other items is not encouraged and should be kept to a minimum.
  2. Journals may not be removed at all, except briefly for the purpose of legal personal photocopying.
  3. Reference books should not be borrowed, except with the express permission of the Librarian, or briefly for the purpose of legal personal photocopying.
  4. Other books may be borrowed for a period of up to two weeks. Please return the book as soon as you have finished with it.
  5. The procedure for borrowing and returning a book is as follows:
    (i)
Record your name and the details of the book on a green loan card, remembering to take a note of the book's classification number, found on the spine of the book. The green cards are held in a labelled box on the desk in the main library.
    (ii)
Place the completed card in the correct place on the shelf as indicated by the book's classification number. The card replaces the book, and anyone who needs the book will immediately know who has borrowed it.
    (iii)
When returning the book, replace it in the correct position on the shelf, remove the green card, complete the date returned section, cross out the book details and return the card to the labelled box.

  6. The position of each book or journal is recorded in a card catalogue. The catalogues for books and journals are in the main library.
  7. If you find a book that is out of place on the shelves, please reshelve it. If you find a book that has apparently been misclassified, please bring it to the Librarian's attention.
  8. Please keep flat surfaces clear unless you are using them.
  9. Floor plans of the various library rooms may be obtained from the Librarian.
  10. The Library, Xerox Room, Instrument Room and Archives Room are designated `No Smoking' areas.
