Eric Lindsay, Sheelagh Grew, Patrick Moore, David Andrews, Margaret Cherry, Harry Grossie
This survey was undertaken at the suggestion of the present Director of Armagh Observatory, Dr. E. M. Lindsay, without whom it certainly could not have been completed. In addition to making many invaluable suggestions, Dr. Lindsay has also provided all the information about what I have termed the modern period, from 1938 to the present time.
Miss Sheelagh Grew, Secretary at the Observatory, has also been of the greatest assistance throughout the compilation.
My thanks are due to Miss Felicity Hardcastle, who has provided me with much information about her father, the fifth Director of the Observatory. I am also grateful to Mr. T. G. F. Paterson, for most valuable comments and criticisms.
